When you talk to anyone who plays sport they will often say that “I just want to play better” but what can I do to improve? The simple answer is sometimes just more practice or coaching in your sport to attain a better standard. But sometimes this may not be enough, as you may well know, when you need that little more mobility to achieve a better golf swing or tennis serve, or although you seem to be applying the right tactics on the field or court you still feel slow to move and either miss the ball, or can’t keep up with the opposing players. As a youth athlete you may have specialised in a sport early which can be detrimental for learning different movement patterns and foundational movement for an all-round athlete.
So just playing more sport may still NOT give you what you need to perform better. If we look at your sport we will find that your sport requires many different skills including: – balance, co-ordination, mobility, stability, strength, explosiveness, reactions, mental focus and of course good eating habits. Different combinations of these skills are required depending on your sport. Your sports coach will not usually have time to concentrate on these areas as he/she will be too busy with the sports skill and strategies. However, without these key skills learning and applying your sport skill can become much more difficult, affecting your performance. This can happen at any age. What you really need is a development programme to improve your weaknesses.
Taking time to assess your posture, functional movement, and fitness for any weaknesses as well as the requirements for your sport, allows us to develop a programme for you to provide a foundation to develop your sport movement. This part of the training often gets neglected as people just want to play their sport. But weaknesses can lead to injury, reduce your performance, and prevent you from being picked for your team.
So if you need help in getting in better condition for an event or sport we may be able to help, don’t think that you may be too old to improve, or that being young you are fairly fit and don’t need it, you may be surprised as other sport people have been.
